Yucca Hills MX is a private motocross track at 73292 Old Highway 6 near Wauneta, Nebraska, in the southwest corner of the state. It has been running for more than twenty five years, built and operated by the Barnard family, and it is a combined motocross and supercross layout rather than one or the other. The track is open for practice on a call before you haul basis, and it hosts two major two day race weekends each year.

A Family Built Track

Todd and Teresa Barnard and their son Kevin built Yucca Hills and have owned and operated it ever since. They put the track in around the turn of the century and have held race events every year since.

Those events are the backbone of the operation. The track runs two two day combined points races annually, typically one in June and one in September, jointly sanctioned by the Nebraska Cornhusker Motocross Association and Tri-State Dirt Riders. Combining the two organizations into one points weekend gives riders from both circuits a reason to make the trip.

Rider turnout has ranged from around 68 to as many as 222 per day over the years, with recent weekends drawing roughly 190 riders a day. For a track in a county of fewer than four thousand people, that is a substantial draw, and it comes from riders hauling in across Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado.

Motocross and Supercross in One Layout

The track mixes both disciplines. Long straights and big doubles give it motocross character, while huge tabletops and a long whoop section bring in supercross elements. That combination means riders can work on different skill sets without changing venues.

The prep is where Yucca Hills separates itself from most rural tracks. The property has a complete sprinkler system rather than water trucks, which means consistent moisture across the whole surface and no dust. The track is fully prepped for events, jumps and whoops are groomed, and the starting gates are the backwards falling type used at organized races.

That level of preparation is unusual for a privately owned track and it is the reason race days here run smoothly.

Practice, Camps and Race Days

Practice access works on a call before you haul basis. This is a private property, not a gate you can pull up to, so contact ahead every time. It protects the track and it saves you a wasted drive.

Beyond the two annual race weekends, the Barnards run occasional motocross camps and prepped practice days. Those are worth watching for, because a prepped practice on a track with this level of maintenance is a different experience from riding a rutted public park.

Race weekends follow the standard association routine, with gates and registration opening early in the morning, practice mid morning and racing starting around late morning. Classes cover the full range from pee wee through 65cc, 85cc and 250 and 450 divisions across A, B and C skill levels, so the whole family can enter.

The season runs from early spring into late fall.

Getting There

Wauneta is in Chase County in southwest Nebraska, on Highway 6, about an hour southeast of Imperial and within reach of northwest Kansas and northeast Colorado. The track sits west of town on Old Highway 6.
