Humboldt Speedway is a high banked quarter mile clay oval at 1663 Georgia Road in Humboldt, Kansas, about an hour and a half south of Kansas City in Allen County. Racers know it as “The Hummer,” and it has a national reputation that is unusual for a track in a town of two thousand people. Short, steep and fast, it produces the kind of side by side racing that draws touring series and crowds from more than a dozen states.

A Bullring With National Pull

The Whitworth family bought the track and ran it for roughly three decades, building it from a local Friday night operation into one of the best known quarter mile ovals in the country. Their stewardship is now marked each spring by the Whitworth Spring Classic, which opens the season.

The clearest measure of the track’s standing is its relationship with the United States Modified Touring Series. USMTS first visited Humboldt on June 28, 2000, and has come back so many times that only Deer Creek Speedway in Minnesota has hosted more USMTS main events. Jason Hughes leads all drivers with 13 USMTS wins here. Stormy Scott has six, Kelly Shryock and Ryan Gustin have five apiece, and Rodney Sanders has four.

Weekly Racing

Weekly shows run on Friday nights through the season. The regular divisions are USRA Modifieds, Ray’s Metal Depot USRA B Mods, Extrusions Inc Midwest Mods, Home Savings Bank Pure Stocks and Mini Stock Tuner. Stock Cars and Compacts appear on the card as well depending on the year and the event.

Gates usually open around 6:00 with racing at 8:00, though special events start earlier and pit gates open before that. Admission is higher for specials than for a regular weekly show, so it is worth calling ahead at 620-473-3694 if you are budgeting for a family.

King of America and the Big Specials

The signature event is the USMTS King of America Modified Nationals, a three night modified spectacular held in the spring with a purse that has topped $200,000 across the divisions and a top prize of $15,000 or more for the Saturday finale. USRA Stock Cars and B Mods run all three nights alongside the USMTS Modifieds, and open practice usually falls on the Wednesday before. The Battle at the Bullring, a B Mod centered special, has shared the weekend in some years.

Beyond that, Humboldt hosts the USRA Heartland Modified Tour, which has opened its season with a two night show here in recent years, plus late model events including the COMP Cams Super Dirt Series and MLRA, sprint car dates, midgets, and novelty shows such as school bus races and figure eights. Enduro races appear on the calendar as well.

Getting There and What to Know

The simplest route is US 169 to the Humboldt exit, number 224. Go west one block to the electric plant, turn left, continue to the stop sign, turn left, and the speedway is one mile down on the right. If 169 is closed, navigate to Humboldt and head east on Central Street for about three miles.

Chanute is roughly twenty minutes away and is where most out of town racers and fans book rooms during the big spring events. The track is outdoors with no cover, so weather matters. Rain cancellations and makeup dates are announced by phone and on the track’s social media, and calling before you drive out is standard practice here.
