About Dakota State Fair Speedway
Dakota State Fair Speedway is a dirt oval on the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Huron, South Dakota. New Management, Long Foundation
JSX Promotions has taken over management and operations of the speedway, with Josh Sterrett as co owner and president and Jordon Sterrett as co owner and executive director.
They take over from Orville Chenoweth, who ran the track for many years and built its reputation. Chenoweth was known among touring series promoters for the quality of his track prep, to the point that he would run two very different classes on the same night and rework the surface between them to keep both happy. The new operators have said they intend to continue that tradition of high quality racing while expanding what the track can do.
A Few Big Nights Instead of a Weekly Show
Dakota State Fair Speedway does not race every week. Recent seasons have run a handful of events across the summer, each built around touring competition rather than a house points chase.
WISSOTA classes make up the core of a typical program, with Late Models, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks and Street Stocks on the card. The Repairablevehicles.com Tri-State Late Model Series is a regular visitor, and the track has a long history with late model racing that keeps drivers coming back.
Sprint cars have returned in recent years as well. The Midwest Sprint Touring Series brought 410 sprint cars to Huron and has come back since, and pairing 410 sprints with late models on one night is the kind of card few tracks attempt.
Because the calendar is short, every date matters. Check the schedule before planning a trip rather than assuming there will be racing on a given weekend.
Racing at the Fairgrounds
The State Fairgrounds setting is part of the appeal. The property is a 180 acre multi purpose facility that hosts events year round, so parking, restrooms and crowd infrastructure are built for far bigger crowds than a race night draws.
It also means racing often shares the grounds with something else. Race nights have coincided with the state barbecue contest on the south end of the fairgrounds, which makes for a better evening than a concession stand hot dog.
The South Dakota State Fair itself runs over Labor Day weekend each year, and the fairgrounds calendar carries Wheel Jam, tractor pulls and other motorsports events across the season.
