Jamestown Speedway is a quarter mile high banked clay oval on the Stutsman County Fairgrounds in Jamestown, North Dakota. It races Saturday nights at 7:00 from May through August and closes every season with the Jamestown Stock Car Stampede in September, an event that has now run for more than half a century. With both IMCA and WISSOTA classes on the same card, it is one of the busiest weekly shows in the state.

The Stock Car Stampede

The Stampede is what Jamestown is known for. It is a two day event at the end of September that passed its 50th running in 2021, which makes it one of the longest running dirt track specials in the upper Midwest.

The track describes it as more of a festival than a race, and that is accurate. It brings in drivers and fans from across the Dakotas and Minnesota, and the card expands beyond the weekly classes to include Sport Mods, Late Models and more. If you only make one trip to Jamestown, make it for the Stampede.

Weekly Racing

The regular Saturday card mixes sanctioning bodies, which is unusual. The weekly classes include IMCA Modifieds, WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, WISSOTA Street Stocks, INEX Legends, Bombers and Hobby Stocks, and Junior Slingshots.

That mix is useful for racers. A driver building an IMCA Modified and a driver building a WISSOTA Midwest Mod can race at the same track on the same night, which keeps car counts up in a part of the country where tracks are far apart.

The Junior Slingshots class gives young drivers a real starting point, and the INEX Legends bring a fast, lighter car that races well on a quarter mile with high banks.

Special Events

The calendar between May and September is full of named nights. The Dakota Classic Modified Tour, now well past its thirtieth year, brings IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Stock Cars to Jamestown in July. The Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular is the biggest family night of the summer.

Memorial races honor people who built the track’s community, including the Don Gumke Racers’ Memorial and the Carpenter Memorial. Touring series stop through as well, among them the Steffes WISSOTA Street Stock Tour, the REBEL Midwest Modified Tour and the INEX Legends Tour. The Mary Vetter Hobby Stock and Bomber Challenge gives the entry level classes a featured night of their own.

Sprint cars also appear on special dates, with non wing and RaceSaver sprints on the schedule in recent seasons, along with Late Models and Northern Sport Mods.

Family nights such as Kids Night, Ladies Night and Back to School Night fill in around the specials.

Race Night

Racing starts at 7:00 on Saturday nights. Concessions are available in both the grandstand and the pits, so crews do not have to walk across the fairgrounds for food.

Test and tune usually runs a week before the season opener in May, and season championship night comes at the end of August before the Stampede.

The track sits on the Stutsman County Fairgrounds in Jamestown, which is on I-94 about an hour and a half west of Fargo and an hour and a half east of Bismarck. That central location is why drivers come from both ends of the state.
