Dodge City Raceway Park is a 3/8 mile banked dirt oval at 11322 110 Road, at Highway 56 and 14th Avenue on the south side of Dodge City. It seats about 3,500, it is owned by the City of Dodge City, and it is the anchor track for motorsports in southwest Kansas. Racing runs Saturday nights through the season, with five IMCA divisions on the weekly card and sprint car specials that draw national touring series.

Ninety Years of Racing in the Queen of Cowtowns

Auto racing in Dodge City goes back to 1934, when a half mile dirt track called McCarty Speedway was built in Wright Park at the Ford County Fairgrounds. It ran through the fall of 1941. After changes in size and a major flood in 1965, the facility was rebuilt as a 3/8 mile banked dirt oval that operated from 1966 until it closed for good in 1994.

The town missed it. Dodge City Raceway voted to bring racing back, and in 2000 ground was broken on a new facility on the southern outskirts of town as part of the “Why NOT Dodge” initiative. It was built as a paved track at first, and within a few years it was converted to dirt, which is what the area wanted all along. The current 3/8 mile clay oval is the result, and it has carried the reputation as the premier dirt track in Kansas since.

Weekly Racing

The weekly program is built around five IMCA classes: Modifieds, Stock Cars, Northern Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts. Sprint cars are a regular part of the schedule too, with the United Rebel Sprint Series running as a home series and ASCS 360 cars appearing for specials. High Plains Late Models and NOW600 micro sprints round out the mix.

Gates open at 5:30 on race day, and the main office opens at 9:00 in the morning if you want tickets in hand early. Races are streamed live on RacinDirt.tv.

Sprint Car Country

The 3/8 mile shape suits sprint cars, and Dodge City has hosted the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series for the Boot Hill Showdown, a two night event that has repeatedly landed in the middle of championship battles. Donny Schatz has five World of Outlaws wins here.

The Steve King Memorial is the other marquee weekend, a two day sprint car and midget special that honors Steve King, a sprint car driver from Jetmore who died from injuries suffered in a crash at the 2006 Knoxville Nationals. The American Sprint Car Series National Tour headlines it. Sam Hafertepe Jr. is the only driver to win three ASCS features at the track.

Beyond sprint cars, the calendar has included the Dave Garmann Memorial for High Plains Late Models, the Monster Truck Nitro Tour, the DCRP 305 Nationals, and Classic Flat Track Series motorcycle racing.

Getting There and What to Know

The track is at Highway 56 and 14th Avenue on the south edge of Dodge City. A few things worth knowing before you arrive:

Coolers are not allowed and neither is outside alcohol, though alcohol is sold on site and they do check identification. Seat cushions are fine. Re-entry is allowed. Cash and card are both accepted, but there is no ATM on the property, so bring what you need.

Camping is available on a first come, first served basis with no hookups. Handicap parking sits in the main lot across from the main gate, and accessible seating is in the front row and top row of the main grandstands with elevator access, which is rare for a track this size.

The weather policy is straightforward. No refunds are given, and if an event is postponed your ticket is good for the rescheduled date.
