About Sherman County Speedway
Sherman County Speedway is a 3/8 mile semi banked dirt oval at the Sherman County Fairgrounds on the north side of Goodland, Kansas. It is the westernmost dirt track in the state, sitting about fifteen miles from the Colorado line just off I-70, and it is IMCA sanctioned. This is grassroots racing in the truest sense, run by and for the local racing community, and it has been going long enough that its season finale is now past its 35th running.
Home of the Sherman County Stock Car Racing Association
The track is the home of the Sherman County Stock Car Racing Association, and the fairgrounds setting tells you what kind of operation it is. There is no touring series calendar to plan a season around and no corporate ownership. What there is instead is a group of local racers and volunteers who keep a well shaped 3/8 mile oval running in a county of six thousand people.
Distance shapes everything here. The nearest dirt track is Thomas County Speedway in Colby, 34 miles east on I-70. After that you are looking at Colorado. That isolation is why the Goodland race dates draw cars from across northwest Kansas, eastern Colorado and southwest Nebraska.
Racing and Classes
The track runs IMCA divisions: Modifieds, Stock Cars, Northern Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts. It also runs Econos, a low budget entry class that is common in western Kansas and one of the cheapest ways to get on a dirt track anywhere in the state.
The schedule is shorter than the weekly tracks in eastern Kansas, built around a set number of points nights rather than every Friday or Saturday through the summer. Because of that, checking dates before planning a trip matters more here than at most tracks.
Sprint cars have returned in recent years as well. The POWRi United Rebel Sprint Series came back to Goodland after a thirteen year absence, which was a significant night for the track and for the fans in that corner of the state.
The Flatlanders Fall Classic
The Flatlanders Fall Classic is the event the whole season points toward. It is a two night show in September that closes the year, running B mains and A mains and crowning Flatlanders champions across the divisions. It has been going for more than three and a half decades and it is the biggest weekend on the calendar for racers in the region.
Track champions are decided across all six classes each season, and the same family names turn up in the results year after year, which is the sort of continuity you only get at a community track.
Getting There and What to Know
Goodland sits on I-70 at exit 17, and the fairgrounds are on the north side of town at 417 North Main Avenue. If you are driving I-70 between Denver and Kansas City, the track is essentially on the route.
One practical caution. The track's own website has not been updated in several seasons, and the schedule page still carries an old notice. The reliable places for current dates and cancellations are the track's Facebook page and its MyRacePass listing. The phone number is 785-899-4265.
Weather is a factor. Northwest Kansas gets high winds and fast moving storms, and a program can be called off with little notice, so a phone call or a look at social media before you leave is worth the effort.
