About Salina Speedway
Salina Speedway is a 3/8 mile semi banked clay oval at 2841 South Burma Road, just south of Salina in Saline County. It is the biggest dirt oval in central Kansas and one of the few tracks in the state with a wide enough racing surface to run two and three grooves, which is why touring modified series put it on their schedules. Racing is on Saturday nights, and the season runs from spring through fall.
A Central Kansas Anchor
Salina sits at the junction of I-70 and I-135, roughly halfway between Kansas City and the Colorado line, and the speedway benefits from that. Fans and race teams from Hutchinson, Concordia, Beloit, Clay Center and Park City can all reach it in about an hour, and half a dozen other Kansas dirt tracks fall inside that same radius. For anybody following a division around the state, Salina is usually on the route.
The track operates under Heartland Promotions with Chuck Fairchild as promoter, and it is a member track of the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series, so points earned here count toward national standings. Fans who have followed the place through its ownership changes generally point to the current run as the strongest the facility has looked in years, with real attention paid to track prep and the grandstands.
Weekly Racing
The weekly program has recently featured Modifieds, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, Northern Sport Mods, Sport Compacts and Crown Vics. That last one is worth a mention. Crown Vic racing takes retired police cruisers and turns them into an affordable entry class, and it tends to be the division that gets the loudest reaction from the grandstands.
Seasons typically open in late April or early May with test and tune sessions, followed by an Opening Night that carries an added purse. Recent schedules have included three separate $1,000 to win money races spread through the summer, one each for Modifieds, Stock Cars and Sport Mods.
Special Events
The Revival Super Dirt Series brings late models here for one of the bigger paydays on the calendar, and the USRA Heartland Modified Tour has run at Salina as part of its regional swing. Tanner Mullens took the Heartland Modified Tour win here during a three race streak, which gives some sense of the caliber the track draws.
The Independence Day fireworks show is the biggest family night of the year, and demolition derbies are a regular part of the schedule. Those derby nights pull crowds that do not otherwise come out for a points race, so they are worth watching for if you are bringing people who are new to dirt track.
Getting There and What to Know
From I-135 take exit 92, go 2.5 miles west on Crawford Street, then 2.7 miles south on Burma Road. The track is on the right. Mail goes to a Salina post office box rather than the physical address, so use 2841 South Burma Road for navigation.
