About Lonetree Creek Race Park
Lonetree Creek Race Park is a family owned dirt track at 28482 424th Avenue near Scotland, South Dakota, in the southeast corner of the state. It runs a flat track oval and a half mile TT course on select race weekends, with classes for motorcycles, quads, UTVs and trikes. The track started as a bean field on the Sorlien family farm, and in 2022 it was named Best National Track of the Year by the MWEDT Nationals.
A Bean Field Turned Race Track
The Sorlien family has farmed the land outside Scotland for generations, growing everything from corn to alfalfa. At some point a bean field became a dirt track, and the track became the thing that held the family together through hard times. Their story has been covered in regional sports media, and it is the reason the place feels the way it does on race day. This is a farm family running races for their neighbors, not a business running events for customers.
Christian and Eric Sorlien run the operation today, and the community around it shows in the sponsor list, which reads like a directory of Scotland and the surrounding towns.
Flat Track and TT Racing
Lonetree Creek is not a motocross track, and that is what makes it worth knowing about. The property has a flat track oval and a half mile TT course. Flat track racing is sideways, throttle controlled oval racing, one of the oldest forms of motorcycle competition in America. TT adds a right hand turn and often a jump to the oval format, so riders have to handle both directions and some air.
Very few facilities in the Dakotas run this kind of racing, which is why riders travel to Scotland for it and why the track has hosted national level events.
Classes cover motorcycles, quads and UTVs, with mini, amateur and pro levels so the youngest riders and the fastest ones each have a place. Trikes race here too, and any group of three or more riders makes a class. Classes with ten or more entries carry a holeshot award, which keeps the starts aggressive.
Race Day
Races run on select weekends through the season, including a Pink Cup Race in the summer. Sign up runs from noon to 1:45 in the afternoon, with a late fee after that, and racing starts by 3:00.
Entry fees are set by class level, from minis up through pro. Spectators pay a modest gate fee, and children 8 and under get in free. Primitive camping on the property is free, so hauling in the night before costs nothing extra. Come prepared, since primitive means no hookups.
The track publishes its raceway rules and season points on its website, and the current race flyer is posted there ahead of each event.

Scotland is in Bon Homme County in southeast South Dakota, roughly an hour southwest of Sioux Falls and about half an hour north of Yankton. The track is on 424th Avenue outside town.
