About De Fort Motocross
De Fort Motocross is a private motocross track at 6421 133rd Avenue NW, about 14 miles northeast of Williston, North Dakota. It runs just over a mile with a 24 gate start, built on the Nelson family farm by two longtime riders who wanted a proper track in their hometown. It is the only dedicated motocross facility in the greater Williston area, which makes it the local motocross scene for the entire northwest corner of the state.
Built by Riders Who Wanted Somewhere to Go
The track was designed and built by Joseph Edman and Eric Nelson, two experienced motocross riders from Williston. They put it on the Nelson farm and opened it in 2020, giving the Bakken region something it had never really had.
That gap was real. Western North Dakota has almost no motocross infrastructure, and before De Fort, riders in this part of the state faced a drive of several hours east toward Bismarck to find a track. The oil field workforce has made the rider population in the Williston area far larger than the permanent population suggests, and De Fort answers the practical question of where to ride on a day off.
The reach extends well beyond Williston. Riders from Tioga, Stanley, Watford City and Crosby along the US 2 and US 85 corridors treat it as their everyday option, Minot riders make the trip west, and riders from Sidney and eastern Montana come east across the state line. The Williston area functions as a single regional economy regardless of the border, and this is the closest motocross track for both sides of it.
The Track
The layout runs just over a mile with a 24 gate start, built for jumps, turns and speed with multiple line options.
This is a practice track rather than a race day facility for most of the season. It is a working venue where riders get regular seat time inside the weather windows western North Dakota allows, which realistically runs from late spring into September. The track has also hosted North Dakota Motocross Association racing.
Private Track, Posted Practice Days
De Fort is private. Practice days are posted on the track's Facebook page, and that is the only place they appear, so check before loading up. The track also publishes its rules on the same page and expects riders to read them.
Motocross schools have been part of the operation as well. Former professional racers have run multi day schools here, typically starting with an entry level class for younger riders before moving to sessions for riders on 65cc bikes and up. Those schools have drawn riders from across North Dakota and filled quickly.
